The Ray Finlay

Friends Forever Open Funspiel

Sunday, March 26 at 9:00 a.m.

At Chicago Curling Club

Welcome to the second annual Ray Finlay! If you got this e-mail please pass along the information to your team mates and fellow club members for that matter. To be sure everybody is copied on it. I will have no way of knowing if someone was left out. Everett, I never got Mike Hess’ e-mail so please get this to him. This should be a complete list of teams, match-ups and start times. If you have any questions e-mail  walterburns@sourcemp.com, I hope this is correct and complete however, I will send another one later in the week if corrections are necessary. If sending this by e-mail messes up the format, e-mail me with a fax number and I will forward a copy that way to you.

Points Spiel Values

5 points for a win - 2.5 points for tie – 1 point for each end won - ½ point for each rock scored. If after the last game is played and there is a tie score, a play-off of two full ends -OR- a full team cold draw – one end, measured will determine the winners. Whichever tie solution is most popular between skips involved, will used to break the final score tie.   Because there is a 1st 2nd and 3rd place award, the play-off rule will apply for any contested place finish.

You are invited to join in the second Ray Finlay Friends Forever Open Funspiel, sponsored by the Wilmette Curling Club,

Many thanks to the Chicago Curling Club for authorizing us to use their ice for this end of the season, curling competition, and tribute to Ray Finlay, who was a curling friend to many, but also to other curlers who have passed on and are likely playing the game on another astral plane.  We would like to acknowledge the positive spirit that Ray had for the game and the curling community in general. Curling is a great sport and all who play know the joy it brings to our lives.

Space is limited with 16 teams playing 3-four end games played back-to-back and interchangeably with 8 teams on the ice for the first games then switched with the next 8 teams back and forth to complete the cycle. It will be a points spiel based on game won, ends won and points scored. There will be no team restrictions; anyone can enter as space is available.  You can sign-up as an individual or a team of your choice. The time between games can be spent enjoying the company of those around you reminiscing and storytelling. The organizers are hoping that this will be a fun time for all who participate and that it will continue for many years to come!

To begin, we will limit Chicago and Exmoor to 4 teams each per club, which will allow 8 more teams from the other local Illinois clubs. Two teams each will be allowed from Northwestern, Windy City, Wilmette, and Waltham. If 16 teams don’t register by the deadline, the spiel will be open to teams from any club. If you want to play and you have trouble registering e-mail walterburns@sourcemp.com and ask Walter to see what is he can do in your behalf.

We will utilize the Chicago website (www.chicagocurlingclub.org) for automated sign up for the registration. If there are conflicts, the club affiliation rule will apply and be decided by their club.   The deadline to register for this spiel is 3-19-17.

Participation pins, lunch and snacks for everyone will be served, There is a winner’s Trophy and Pins will be awarded Gold – Silver & Bronze,
