FAQ - I'm a new curler....what do I do next?

1. I'm a new curler....what do I do next?

After you've registered with the club as a new member and established billing, there are five things for you to think about and focus on:

  1. SKILL DEVELOPMENT:  There are a number of certified instructors and other experienced curlers at the Chicago Curling Club that volunteer their time and guidance, free of charge, to assist members with practicing the basics and sharpening those skills over time.   Just like any other sport, there is no better way to improve than by having exposure to the ice and lots of practice.
  2. TERMINOLOGY:  "Burning it after the hog..."  "Wicking off the guard...."   We realize to the novice curler, many terms and slang used in curling must seem silly.  After spending a few minutes online or with other experienced curlers, you'll quickly catch on.
  3. EVENTS:  There are dozens of league and non-league events throughout the season, and several of them are specifically targeted for new curlers.  Rookie Rinks, Friday Night Lites, and many of the Saturday evening mixed "just for fun" spiels are perfect examples of ways to get started with a league.   These events are meant to be fun and informal while being lightly competitive and educational.    See the "Event Details" pages for examples and descriptions.    And if you happen to join the club after the season is underway, don't worry......there is a constant need for substitutes in many leagues, and so even if you are not registered for a league, you may be able to play in it!
  4. CURLING EQUIPMENT/ACCESSORIES:   While the only equipment you truly need to purchase is either a pair of curling shoes or a slider, many curlers also tend to prefer owning their own brooms and/or stabilizers.  You may also find that more flexible, warmer clothing might be appropriate for you.  This is purely a matter of preference, but there are many options available to you if you choose to "gear up" for your own comfort and preference.   See the "Buy Equipment" link  (under "About the Club") for one of our recommended suppliers.
  5. OTHER MEMBERS:   We're a very friendly bunch, always happy to see and help a new curler along.  New members can be partnered with a club "mentor" who can be the "go-to" person for questions, details, explanations, and general guidance when needed.  Much of this sport focuses on camaraderie and teamwork, and so new curlers often make many new friendships.
